Incentive Systems: Transaction vs. Objective-Based Solutions

Companies use a variety of incentive programs to focus and motivate performance. Some incentive plans are “transaction-based”, such as sales compensation programs and others are “objective-based” such as management by objectives (MBO) programs. Both are important to the success of a company’s performance. However, the administrative system needed to support each type of program differs substantially.

In transaction-based incentive plans, seller payout schedules are tied to actual sales results, by order, by customer, by territory. As the order system tracks and adjusts sales credits, the incentive plan software calculates and accumulates payouts.

In objective-based incentive plans greater emphasis is placed on manager/employee interaction, with the supervisor setting goals for each employee. There is often dialog and interaction between the manager and the subordinate. Final incentive awards are an accumulation of managers’ assessments of their employees’ performance on both quantitative and qualitative measures. PMIS™ is an objective-based support solution.

You can easily configure PMIS™ to match your corporate environment. Managers and employees can define targets and objectives. At the end of the performance period (e.g., month, quarter, and year), managers and employees can interactively enter achievement scores and feedback. Payout calculates automatically using the payout schedules assigned to the employee's job category. Administrators provide overall program effectiveness by tracking participation, results and payouts.
